HPC & AI Empowering Data Analytics
View Program Book (PDF) View Program ScheduleBig Data Summit (BDS) 2016 was held on 5th and 6th of May at Hotel Bangi-Putrajaya in collaboration with CONNECT2SEA to explore Horizon 2020 funding opportunities in the field of Big Data and to set-up dialogues to discuss strategies, opportunities and challenges faced by EU and SEA communities in Big Data.
The Big Data Summit 2: HPC & AI Empowering Data Analytics (BDS2) is a continuity of BDS to provide a collaborative platform for both international and local researchers to showcase their research efforts in the field of data analytics. This summit may also foster research ties by providing collaboration opportunities between international and local entities. As an effort to get more prominent coverage from the related community, this summit is organised to co-locate with the 35th PRAGMA meeting to take advantage on the networking opportunities that could be leveraged from the PRAGMA community of practice that spans through the Pacific Rim.
To empower researchers with the current trends in data analytics, the Big Data Summit 2 is focused at the applications of HPC and AI for Data Analytics with the specific objectives as follows:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the foundation for cognitive computing, an approach that enables machines to mimic the neural pathways of the human brain to analyze vast datasets, make decisions in real time, and even predict future outcomes.
High Performance Computing (HPC) accelerates innovation in diverse areas - ranging from molecular chemistry to genome sequencing, energy exploration, and financial trading. Its capabilities to support real-time analytics with in-memory computing; big data analytics; and simulation and modelling empowered users to execute compute- and data-intensive workloads quickly and accurately.
While AI applications, such as machine learning and deep learning, are transforming industries across the globe, HPC technologies works silently behind-the-scenes to empower AI applications. The HPC infrastructure enables AI applications to handle high-performance workloads, such as advanced analytics. HPC are now becoming the engine of AI. Hence, any progression in AI or HPC will definitely empowered (transformed) analytics. Therefore, this summit is a platform for Malaysian (possibly International) researchers to showcase their efforts in both fields of supporting analytics and to seek collaboration opportunities, international and local.
The Pacific Rim Application and Grid Middleware Assembly (PRAGMA) is an international, distributed community of practice for technology and approaches that supports the long tail of science, namely enabling small to medium sized international groups, to make rapid progress in conducting research and education by providing and developing international, experimental cyberinfrastructure.
PRAGMA’s community of practice comprising individuals and institutions from around the Pacific Rim that actively collaborate and meet-up to discuss progresses, issues and concerns by groups. PRAGMA meetings are held twice a year in its distributed communities countries. Malaysia had been the host for the 15th meeting in 2008.

With PRAGMA codeBig Data Summit 2 (BDS2) is currently inviting posters presentations & project speakers for the event. BDS2 aimed at connecting industry, scientists, and university lecturers in one event to collaborate on interesting ideas related to Big Data in various spectrum. The thematic focus of this call is based on HPC and AI empowering Data Analytics.
The Poster presents an opportunity to share your late-breaking results, technical descriptions, smaller research contributions, works-in-progress and student projects in a concise and visible format. Accepted posters will be displayed in the event’s venue, including a designated poster session, providing presenters with an opportunity to engage in discussion and collaboration with other attendees on their research.
The Project Speaker provides you the venue to talk about your on-going project, show case your project outcomes, share your success stories, as well as highlighting potential project ideas to find potential partners which open the opportunities in forming quality international partnerships for international collaboration such as funding opportunities etc. Accepted projects will be given 15 minutes slot to speak to the wide audience during the event.
Authors are required to submit a one-page abstract of the poster presentation. Poster abstract should be a maximum of one page ONLY, clearly summarizing the research questions addressed and their contribution to the research community. The abstract will be peer reviewed by the panel of experts of the event. Accepted and registered abstract will be given the opportunity to participate in the Poster session of Big Data Summit 2 as well as inclusion of the abstract in the summit’s program book for collaboration and networking among researchers.
The contents for the poster abstract should be as follows:
Preparation of camera ready poster abstract will be requested after the acceptance of poster paper. All submissions should be anonymized and will be reviewed by the panel of experts.
Authors are required to submit a one-page abstract of the project. Project abstract should be a maximum of one page only, clearly summarizing the main idea regarding your on-going or implemented project, its innovative impact, the pursued strategy for sustainability, the degree of openness for collaboration as well as your targeted partners.
Project abstract aiming for international or national level research collaboration should focus on strategy that aim at benefiting the society, not limited to industry 4.0. This to allow a larger potential of your proposed project or idea to be developed into research proposals fulfilling the requirement of international grant funders such as Newton, APT, Erasmus etc.
Project abstract aiming for industry-academia collaboration should focus on the readiness of the research, demonstration of prototype etc.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the panel of experts of the event.
Authors of accepted and registered abstracts will be invited to present a 15 minutes talk on their projects.
